To participate in international commercial trade out of India, securing an Import Export Code (IEC) is the absolute first legal step. Issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce, the IEC is a unique 10-digit code that is mandatory for clearing customs, setting up trade bank accounts, and shipping goods worldwide.
Why is the Import Export Code (IEC) Required?
The IEC acts as the identity card of your business on the international trade stage. You will need it under the following circumstances:
- Customs Clearance: Customs authorities require the IEC to clear imported goods at seaport or airport terminals.
- Foreign Remittance: Banks require the IEC to process outgoing international payments or receive incoming foreign export currencies.
- Export Benefits: Export promotion schemes, duty drawbacks, and subsidies from the DGFT cannot be claimed without an active IEC.
Key Documents Required for Online IEC Application
- Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the business or proprietor.
- Aadhaar Card or Passport of the applicant.
- Proof of business constitution (Incorporation Certificate, Partnership Deed).
- Pre-printed cancelled cheque or Bank Certificate showing business account details.
- Address proof of the business premises (Electricity bill / Rent agreement).
Step-by-Step Application Process on DGFT Portal
The entire process is fully online and integrated with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and Income Tax databases:
- DGFT Portal Registration: Visit the official DGFT website and create a user profile using your PAN and Aadhaar-linked phone number.
- Apply for IEC: Click on Apply for IEC under the Services menu.
- Fill Application Form (ANF-2A): Enter your business details, proprietor/director addresses, and bank accounts.
- Upload Attachments: Upload scanned copies of address proofs and the cancelled cheque.
- Fee Payment: Pay the statutory government application fee online.
- E-Sign & Submit: Authenticate the application using your Aadhaar OTP or Class 3 DSC.
- Instant Issuance: If details match, the system issues the digital e-IEC certificate instantly for download.
Linking AD Code & ICE Gate Registration
Getting your IEC is only half the battle. To actually ship goods, you must register your Authorized Dealer (AD) Code (obtained from your commercial bank) with Customs at the specific port from which your goods will be shipped (seaport/ICD/airport). This process is executed on the Indian Customs Electronic Gateway (ICEGATE) portal.
